eduroam
eduroam (short for education roaming) worldwide wireless network for educational and research institutions worldwide. It allows students, researchers, and staff from eduroam connected organisations to connect to the internet at any eduroam-enabled location using their home institution’s login credentials. These credentials are often username and password issued by the home organisation.
How does eduroam work?
So if members of educational institutions can use their home organisations’ credentials to access eduroam networks worldwide, there must be a central location where all eduroam credentials are stored, right? Wrong. This would be extremely demanding from the top level eduroam organisation and performance would almost certainly be a constant issue.
Wi-Fi roaming solves this issue. The credentials are only stored at the home organisation, and the authentication process is proxied from the visiting organisation onto the home organisation. The visited organisation will only see the result of the authentication and act accordingly.
In Europe, each country had their own eduroam root organisation, NREN, which acts as a proxy for organisations within the country. On top of the NREN organisation is the root eduroam, which proxies requests between NREN organisations. This way all participating organisations are connected to each other and same credentials can be used with security.
